Getting Started
Why does the app show a refresh button instead of my data?
ZoneMax reads from Apple Health. On first launch, tap the refresh button to grant permission and load your data. If you've already granted permission and still see the button, pull down to refresh or tap it — the app doesn't run in the background until you've opened it at least once.
What permissions does ZoneMax need?
ZoneMax requests read access to the following Health categories: heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), resting heart rate, VO₂ Max, workouts, sleep analysis, and active energy. None of these are required — the app will show whatever data is available and skip anything it can't access.
Does ZoneMax work without an Apple Watch?
Partially. VO₂ Max and HRV require an Apple Watch to record. Zone breakdowns rely on heart rate data from workouts, which can also come from third-party sensors that write to Apple Health. Recovery scores are most accurate with HRV data from overnight readings.
Recovery Score
How is my recovery score calculated?
The score (0–100) is a weighted composite of four factors recorded overnight: HRV, resting heart rate, sleep duration, and recent training load. You can adjust the weight of each factor in Settings → Recovery Score.
Why is my recovery score estimated?
If ZoneMax doesn't have enough data for one or more components (typically HRV), it will mark the score as estimated and fill in reasonable defaults. Wearing your Apple Watch to sleep consistently will improve accuracy.
What do the tiers mean?
- Ready (80–100): Your body is primed — a good day for Zone 4–5 intervals or pushing a new PR.
- Moderate (60–79): Recovered enough for a solid session. Keep it in Zone 2–3 and stop short of failure.
- Low (40–59): Signs of accumulated fatigue. An easy Zone 1–2 walk or some mobility work is the smart move.
- Rest (0–39): Your signals are showing significant stress. Take the day — sleep, hydration, and a walk at most.
Heart Rate Zones
How does ZoneMax define the zones?
By default, ZoneMax uses max heart rate percentage. You can switch to Karvonen (heart rate reserve), LTHR (lactate threshold), or fully custom floors in Settings → Heart Rate Zones.
Where does ZoneMax get my max heart rate?
It calculates an age-based estimate (220 − age) unless you enter a value manually in Settings → Heart Rate Zones → Max Heart Rate. If you know your tested max, entering it manually gives the most accurate zones.
Why don't my zones match what my watch says?
Different apps and devices use different zone models. ZoneMax lets you fully customise zones to match whatever system you train with.
VO₂ Max
How is VO₂ Max measured?
ZoneMax displays the VO₂ Max estimate Apple Health receives from your Apple Watch. The Watch generates this estimate automatically during outdoor runs and walks using GPS and heart rate data. ZoneMax does not calculate it independently.
Why is my VO₂ Max missing or not updating?
Apple Watch requires an outdoor run or walk with wrist-based heart rate (not a chest strap) to generate a reading. Indoor workouts and strength training do not produce VO₂ Max estimates. Make sure Location Services is enabled for Workout during outdoor sessions.
Apple Watch
Why does the watch show "Open ZoneMax on iPhone"?
The watch app receives data from the iPhone over Bluetooth. Open ZoneMax on your iPhone first — it will sync the latest snapshot to your watch within a few seconds.
How do I add ZoneMax complications to my watch face?
Long-press your watch face → Edit → tap a complication slot → scroll to ZoneMax. Available complications: Recovery Score (circular, corner, inline, rectangular) and Zone Breakdown (inline, rectangular).
Why do the complications show a dash or no data?
Complications update periodically — not in real time. Open the ZoneMax app on your iPhone to push a fresh data sync to the watch. Complications will then refresh on their next scheduled update (typically within a few minutes).
Data & Privacy
Does ZoneMax store or transmit my health data?
No. All data stays on your device. ZoneMax reads from Apple Health and stores display snapshots locally — nothing is sent to any server, and there is no ZoneMax account or cloud component.
Can I use ZoneMax if I'm under 18?
ZoneMax reads health data that may not be appropriate to interpret without context for younger users. We recommend parental guidance for users under 18.
How do I delete my data?
ZoneMax stores only display snapshots (not raw health records) in your device's local storage. Deleting the app removes all of this. Your underlying health data in Apple Health is unaffected.
Troubleshooting
The app is missing data I know is in Apple Health.
Go to Settings → HealthKit → Open Health Settings, find ZoneMax under Apps, and verify all categories are toggled on. If a category is missing, it may not have been requested yet — open the app and pull to refresh to trigger a fresh permission check.
My zone breakdown shows no workouts.
ZoneMax reads workouts that include heart rate data recorded at one-second or five-second intervals. Workouts logged manually or imported without HR data will not appear.
